English for Everyday and Social Life

What Will We Learn in This Program?

We help adults who can form basic English sentences keep everyday conversations going and participate more comfortably in social life in Canada. Each week, we prepare for a shared situation and practise in pairs with different responses.

Keeping Everyday Conversations Going

  • Explain a need with a brief description and ask relevant questions.

  • Confirm the day, time, and location during appointment or service conversations.

  • Ask about alternatives when the answer is not what was expected.

  • Ask for repetition, an example, or slower speech when something is unclear.

Chatting with New People

  • Start short conversations with neighbours, other parents, or people just met.

  • Ask about interests and everyday life.

  • Develop a conversation with a relevant follow-up question or comment.

  • End a conversation appropriately and express interest in meeting again.

Taking Part in Activities You Enjoy

  • Ask about an activity's content, time, cost, and participation requirements.

  • Ask whether beginners can join and what materials are needed.

  • Introduce yourself in a new setting, ask for help, and clarify simple instructions.

  • Describe favourite pastimes and find shared interests with others.

Making Plans Together and Sharing Experiences

  • Invite someone to an activity and respond to an invitation.

  • Agree on a suitable time and place, suggesting an alternative when needed.

  • Describe an activity attended or a short experience in simple sentences.

  • Explain a preference and feelings with a brief reason.

Listening, Reading, and Writing

  • Identify the information needed in short, clear conversations.

  • Understand simple activity announcements and everyday messages.

  • Write short messages to request information, invite someone, or communicate a change of plans.

Learning Support

Turkish explanations, model expressions, and sentence starters support preparation. The same communication skills are practised with different roles and responses. Participants are encouraged to try using what they learn in everyday life when ready; attending outside activities is optional.

12-Week Program Content

Each week focuses on a shared everyday or social situation. In the first lesson, participants prepare key expressions and try short conversations. In the second, partners, roles, and responses change to practise keeping conversations going.

Week 1 — From Introductions to Conversation
Briefly introduce yourself, find shared interests, and extend an introductory conversation with follow-up questions.

Week 2 — Everyday Encounters
Start short conversations with neighbours, other parents, or people at familiar places. End a conversation appropriately.

Week 3 — Explaining What You Need
Ask about a product or service. Explain your needs with brief details and confirm information heard.

Week 4 — Appointments and Alternatives
Request an appointment, discuss available times, and communicate a change of plans. Ask for alternatives when the preferred time is unavailable.

Week 5 — Sharing Your Interests
Describe favourite pastimes and activities you want to try. Ask follow-up questions to learn about someone else's interests.

Week 6 — Asking About an Activity
Read a simple announcement. Ask about the activity, cost, time, enrollment requirements, and materials needed.

Week 7 — Joining a New Setting
Introduce yourself at a class, club, or activity. Ask where to go, what to do, and about an unclear instruction.

Week 8 — Invitations and Shared Plans
Invite someone to an activity, accept an invitation, or say you are unavailable. Agree on a day, time, and place.

Week 9 — When a Conversation Does Not Go as Expected
Clarify an unclear response, ask for time to think, and try expressing an idea with different words.

Week 10 — Sharing Experiences
Describe an activity attended or a short experience. Share what you enjoyed, how you felt, and why.

Week 11 — Staying in Touch
Write a short message to someone you have met, request information, and suggest meeting again. Respond appropriately to a message.

Week 12 — Conversations from Real Life
Role-plays combine introductions, requesting information, joining activities, and making shared plans. Reflect on personal progress and set the next practice goal.

Practice Between Lessons

Short listening samples, expression cards, and small speaking tasks are provided. Participants can try using what they learn in their own lives when ready. Those unable to practise outside continue working on the same skills through classroom role-plays. Outside activities are optional, and their fees are not included in the program.
